South University, Cleveland alumnus Edwin Pouncival Smith RN, BSN spends each work day caring for critically ill patients at the Cleveland Clinic’s Medical Intensive Care Unit. It is a position that requires intense focus on each patient.
“My duties include providing direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of Cleveland Clinic; implementation and monitoring of patient care plans, serving as the primary coordinator and manager of care of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care, assessing the educational needs of the patient and significant others considering cultural issues and other special concerns, and maintaining professional growth and development through ongoing formal and informal education and clinical nursing study,” he explains.
“I am so lucky to have such a supportive group of coworkers,” Smith continues. “Each and every one of them fought for me to become a nurse on the unit because they believed in my abilities as a nurse, and they believed that I had the power to positively impact the lives of patients. I am proud to say that I have chosen a great career and great place to work.”
Smith says his South University education prepared him well for his career path.
“South University prepared me by challenging me and offering a real-life educational experience. There were numerous clinical hours that allowed me to become a part of nursing profession.
“My education has opened up many doors that I didn’t believe were possible. I have the career that I have always dreamed of and I couldn’t ask for anything more!”
Smith’s sites are now set on earning advanced nursing degrees, and continuing to have his work focus on patients. He is currently enrolled in the South University, Online Programs Master of Science in Nursing with a Specialization in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program.
“I have plans of serving as primary care provider for an underserved community one day,” Smith explains. “This is my ultimate dream job! I would love to give back to a community in need and keep individuals healthy! I want to be that voice that they need to persevere.”
