South University, Cleveland RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing student Vitrea Singleton was chosen as the 2016 Ohio Nurse of the Year in the Case Management/ Managed Care Category by the March of Dimes.

Singleton is the manager of care management at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation – Hillcrest Hospital. Her nomination for the award detailed numerous achievements in patient care, along with improving her area’s performance in regards to institutional standards and benchmarks.

The nomination also detailed how she had greatly impacted one patient’s life. The patient was a paraplegic who depended on a ventilator. For nearly a decade, he had bounced around numerous nursing homes. While being cared for in Singleton’s unit, he told her about his desire to live outside of a nursing facility. She worked with him, his caregivers, Medicaid, and Social Security to help him meet all of the requirements before his hospital discharge. For the first time in nine years, he was able to live at home. Singleton says the patient even returned to her unit one Christmas Day to thank her for helping him return to a life outside of medical facilities and nursing homes.
