International Medical Mission Trip

South University, Savannah Doctor of Pharmacy students spent part of December on an international medical mission trip.

The student members of Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) spent a week in Costa Rica to help provide medical care to two impoverished communities. This is the first time the Savannah student group has taken an international medical mission trip.

Students worked with a physician and a pharmacist at a medical clinic in Alajuela, Costa Rica. They assisted the physician by taking patients’ vital signs and discussing their medical and medication history. The students then presented their findings to the doctor and assisted in developing a treatment plan for each patient. The team had the chance to care for patients with a variety of medical concerns including cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and infectious diseases.

In the clinic pharmacy, students worked alongside pharmacists preparing prescriptions and counseled patients and answered medical or disease-related questions along with questions about their medication’s correct use and potential side effects.

The trip also gave students the opportunity to visit a local pharmacy and the University of Costa Rica School of Pharmacy. These visits highlighted the differences in laws, education, training and pharmacy practices and gave students the opportunity to share their knowledge, and also learn from, professionals whose experiences were very different from their own.

CPFI students are planning to return to Costa Rica for another medical mission trip in December 2018.
