| Student writing featured in Southern Reflections |
|
SU Montgomery - In July dozens of students, faculty and staff members and family visitors celebrated the publication of the latest Southern Reflections, South University Montgomery’s literary magazine. This was the 8th published edition of Southern Reflections, but the first time the publication was recognized with a formal reception and reading. The library was packed with students, faculty and staff, making it a standing-room-only event. (Photo: Students, faculty and staff gathered to hear students read their work.)
Not only was the publication unveiled and distributed, but Basil Manly, dean of academic affairs, and Pat McCormick, dean of student affairs, passed out specially printed certificates of achievement to the over 40 contributors. The background for the certificates and the event program were both created using the photograph taken by Denise Long Coulter, a South University student.
The lead editor, Libby Christensen, English instructor, led the reading. “The contributors to this year’s Southern Reflections worked hard and showed a great deal of creativity,” said Ms. Christensen. “I hope these students enjoy being published authors. We could not put the magazine together without all of the students’ work.”
After acknowledging and thanking the hard work of Charlyn Liddell, English instructor, and Donna Long, library circulation assistant, who assisted with the judging of the entries and prepared the text for publication, Ms. Christensen thanked Student Affairs for finding money in the budget for printing.
To showcase the variety of work, several students agreed to read selections. Candice Parker and Karen Peterson read poems. Donna Long, a master’s program student as well as a university library staff member, read her research essay. Sherlanda Johnson read a drama critique, and Justin Ross completed the readings with a personal essay. Ms. Christensen concluded the program with just enough time for a few refreshments before many attendees departed to make their 6:00 p.m. classes.
