English Instructor takes top prize at art show |
SU Montgomery (Spring 2009) - English Instructor, Libby J. Christensen took first place, a $500 prize, in ServisFirst Bank’s regional art show in Montgomery. Not only did “Crossing the River I: Battered, Black and Blue” take the top prize among nearly 100 pieces of art, but she was the only artist to win two awards; she earned an Honorable Mention on her photo of the Wetumpka Bridge titled: “Crossing Toward Hope in a Cold World.” Christensen has frequently won awards in photography and even has had work chosen for publication, but she entered the contest because it was organized to raise money for the Renascence Re-Entry Program, which is a charity that helps the those in the halfway house and parolees reintegrate into society. “Some of my students at South University are criminal justice majors, who are very interested in this cause," said Christensen, who was intrigued by the theme of the art show: “Crossing the River Together.”
Christensen is known regionally for her photography; she works largely in travel photography. However, the winning image is an abstract created by rippling water reflection. “Notice the ‘bars;’” she points out, “I thought it looked a little like prison bars. In any case, it appealed to me.” (Photo: Christensen with 1st place overall winning art, her photo title: “Crossing the River I: Battered, Black and Blue" Thanks to The Wetumpka Herald May 6, 2009 for this story. |
