Faculty News: Priscilla Bartolone earns her Doctor of Nursing Science degree
SU West Palm Beach – Nursing Program Director, Priscilla Bartolone, successfully defended her dissertation and earned a Doctor of Science Nursing (DNS) degree in late October. She will walk in the graduation ceremony on December 11 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
“Completing all of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Nursing Science was a long-term commitment,” said Dr. Bartolone, who enrolled in the program in 2002 and has been steadily making progress while working full time at South University.

“Dr. Bartolone is dedicated to her students, to her colleagues, and to her profession,” said David McGuire, President – West Palm Beach. “I am impressed with her tenacity and know that she is an inspiration not only to our Nursing students but to all of our students in West Palm Beach.”
Her dissertation titled: Perceptions of Professional Competence by Newly Licensed, Registered Nurses included a qualitative study about how new nurses perceive professional competence and see themselves during their initial assignments after licensing. The topic is timely because the nursing shortage has resulted in new and different demands being placed on first-year nurses, and, without residency requirements, nurses may not have the opportunity to assimilate into the profession with the appropriate time to grow their own proficiency.
She conducted a phenomenological study to discover what is it like for new nurses. In short, she concludes that they have a “strong sense of self and of knowing their limitations. They keep safe patient care as their first priority and know it is their responsibility to seek answers.”
Dr. Bartolone has taught nursing since 1981 and has been with South University since 2000.
