SU Tampa & West Palm Beach - The South University Honor Society of Nursing inducted 41 new members, growing total members to 90 in its first year. The Tampa campus held its first induction ceremony in Spring Quarter 2008 and added additional members in early December (photo to left). The West Palm Beach campus held its first induction ceremony in early December as well (photo to right). The Columbia campus, currently enrolling students in their new nursing program, will induct their first candidates duringSpring Quarter 2009.

In May 2008, South University began the 1-2 year process of earning recognition as a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing by establishing an honor society for its nursing students. To be recognized, the South University society must demonstrate a commitment to research, scholarship, professionalism and financial viability. Future plans for the honor society include research scholarships and research programs.
“The members inducted and renewed during this petitioning process will become charter members of the new chapter of Sigma Theta Tau,“ according to Dr. Rose Brault, chapter president and South University professor.
The Honor Society of Nursing will provide students with several benefits including avenues to: recognize superior achievement; recognize the development of leadership qualities; foster high professional standards; encourage creative work; and strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession. Baccalaureate and graduate students who meet certain eligibility requirements, such as GPA, academic integrity and professionalism, are invited to join the society by the faculty counselors. Nurse Leaders from the community may be nominated by members.
NursingHonorSocietyWPB1208_webSigma Theta Tau was founded in 1922 by six students of nursing at Indiana University. During the past 85 years, the honor society has evolved to 451 chapters across the globe, with more than 400,000 inducted members who are active in more than 90 countries and territories.
Each campus elects a vice president and faculty advisors; other officers serve across all campuses. A call for nominations for vacant positions has been issued to members, with elections scheduled in fall.
